In Memory of Bobby Wellins
Many of you will have heard the sad news about the passing away of Bobby Wellins in October 2016 . As someone who played with Bobby from time to time, including some gigs at The Snowdrop, I'd just like to express a deep sadness and a feeling of loss so many of us will have felt. Bobby was truly one of the greatest and most original voices in jazz and recognised as such both at home and internationally. His sound had a beauty, melancholy and swing that was immediately recognisable as his own.
I hadn't seen or spoken to Bobby since his stroke about a year ago but my good friend and trumpeter Raul D'Oliviera said he spoke to him regularly and as recently as two weeks ago Bobby sounded very upbeat and was looking forward to getting back to playing. So very sadly this was not to happen.
It was a great honour for me personally to have Bobby accept to play as a guest on the first Cubana Bop album in 1996 with Raul, and the guys and you can hear Bobby playing with his beautiful sound on this afro-cuban arrangement of
Bobby Timmon’s Moaning’ here.
Thanks for all your wonderful music Bobby. You were truly a great and you will be deeply missed.
